State Assembly candidates busy with last-minute campaigning before special election

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The special election is just two days away which means candidates running for the 31st District Assembly seat spent the weekend reminding folks to vote.

The final weekend for campaigning before Tuesday's special election is wrapping up and all three candidates running wasted no time getting their names out.

Fresno council member Clint Oliver says he's been very busy walking precincts, visiting neighbors and making hundreds of phone calls.

"The first few you make you think, 'gosh am I intruding on what someone is trying to do or it's the weekend' but after you get through those first few calls you get comfortable with it."

Olivier says it's a big district and knowing which ballots are still out there is key to reeling in voters.

"We know whose ballots are still out there and those are the ones we are going after," Olivier said.

Reeling in those voters is key for candidate Dr. Joaquin Arambula too. He's been hitting the pavement trying get those last minute votes and increasing voter turnout.

"We've had several hundred walkers out on both Saturday and Sunday," Arambula said. "Just today, I was walking with speaker Randon who came down from Sacramento. He walked a mile in our shoes."

Engineer Ted Miller says over the past months he has been knocking on doors. He also has been encouraging people to mail in their votes.

"We've had good response on the vote by mail ballots, so the turnout for this election looks like it's going to exceed expectations," Miller said.

And he has a message for those who still have their vote by mail ballots.

"You can mail them up until election day, and if you're not sure how much postage to put on the ballot, put one stamp, put no stamp. It will be delivered to the county registrar no matter what," Miller said.
