Angels' Albert Pujols bruises hand on Drew Hutchison pitch

TORONTO -- Los Angeles Angels slugger Albert Pujols suffered a bruised left hand Wednesday when he was hit by a pitch delivered by Blue Jays starter Drew Hutchison in the fifth inning of a 4-3 win.

Pujols doubled over in pain after being struck and was examined by a trainer but stayed in the game to run the bases, eventually being stranded at third base. He left the game an inning later.

After the game Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto sent a text saying the X-rays were negative.

"He's OK," Dipoto texted. "He'll be day to day with a bruised hand."

Pujols handled one chance defensively in the bottom half of the inning, completing a double play at first base, but was replaced by pinch hitter Marc Krauss in the fifth.

"It was sore to where he was going to have trouble gripping a bat," manager Mike Scioscia said. "We had to make a move."

Pujols, who went 0 for 1 before leaving, is batting .231 with seven home runs and 15 RBIs.

He missed 15 games in June and July 2011 after fracturing his left wrist in a collision at first base with Kansas City's Wilson Betemit.
