SAN FRANCISCO --Giantsright fielder Hunter Pence has been placed on the 15-day disabled list as expected because of tendinitis in his left wrist.
He hasn't played since injuring the wrist June 2 on a diving catch at AT&T Park on a ball hit byPittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen, so Friday's roster move is retroactive to June 3. Pence already had begun the season on the DL because of a fractured left forearm he injured during spring training then returned May 16 to play 18 games.
It's unclear how long it will take Pence to fully heal, and manager Bruce Bochy said the current injury could have come from an arm that was already susceptible after his previous break. Pence is eligible to return from the DL next Thursday.
"I try to remain hopeful," Bochy said of Pence needing the minimum time on the disabled list. "Right now he hasn't been doing anything."
He batted .282 with two home runs, four doubles and 13 RBI. In each of the past two seasons, the 32-year-old Pence appeared in all 162 regular-season games.
Pence was set to be examined by a team doctor Friday, so he had little time to chat.
"Finally noticed some improvement," he said, noting he's uncertain about a timetable. "I don't know that answer."
San Francisco filled the roster spot by purchasing the contract of right-handed reliever Michael Broadway from Triple-A Sacramento. He flew in from El Paso -- getting to the Bay Area about 2 p.m. Friday.
Broadway has never pitched in a major league game or even been on the roster previously as he seeks his debut after 11 years in the minors. The 28-year-old Broadway went 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA and five saves in 22 appearances for the River Cats.
Bochy said outfielder Gregor Blanco, on the seven-day concussion list since Wednesday, told him he is feeling much better.
"He's getting over the hump with the dizziness," Bochy said.
