Luke Walton remains interim coach for Steve Kerr into regular season

Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr will not be leading his team on opening night.

General manager Bob Myers announced Saturday that Kerr is still suffering from back surgery complications and that interim coach Luke Walton will continue his role into the regular season, including Tuesday's opener against the New Orleans Pelicans.

Myers said there remains no timetable on Kerr's return.

"Even if you ask Steve, he doesn't know," Myers said.

Kerr had back surgery July 28 to repair an injury he suffered while coaching in the NBA Finals. During the surgery, the dura around his spine was cut, causing a spinal fluid leak. A subsequent surgery was performed Sept. 4 to repair the issue.

As a result of the original leak, Kerr has been dealing with painful headaches, with little indication as to when they will subside.

"Basketball is everything he's ever known and loved," Myers said. "So you can relate to that. You can know he'd do anything to be out here in full capacity."

Kerr will occasionally be around the team when he feels capable. He attended Saturday's practice and was seen consulting with Warriors owner Joe Lacob and various players.

Walton was informed Friday that he would be coaching the team into the season.

"When he first stepped away, my gut told me he'd be back by the start of the season," the 35-year-old assistant said Saturday. "But my gut was wrong."

Despite not coaching the team, Kerr will attend Tuesday's game, which begins with Golden State's championship ring ceremony.

"He'll be there to get his ring," Myers said. "Know that."
