New York City FC midfielder Frank Lampard has played down his reunion with old Premier League rival Steven Gerrard, telling ESPN FC he is looking forward to facing LA Galaxy on Saturday.

The Galaxy and Gerrard -- an ex-England international colleague of Lampard -- travel to New York for a keenly-anticipated game, but the in-form Lampard said he just wanted to "enjoy the rivalry."

The two first played together for England in a friendly against South Africa in 2003 and went on to win more than 100 caps each, while their long rivalry at club level included three Champions League semifinal meetings.

Lampard said people focusing on his battle with ex-Liverpool captain Gerrard was "normal" and added: "We're used to that -- it was like that with Chelsea and Liverpool for many a year.

"We're probably more relaxed about it and can enjoy it more these days.

"It was quite intense, Liverpool and Chelsea -- we played each other so often. It wasn't just about me and Steven, but people were always billing that as a midfield battle."

Lampard voiced his admiration for Gerrard, saying: "I get on very well with him. He is an absolute legend of the game, and I look forward to going up against him.

"Of course we want to beat each other, but we will be very professional, enjoy the rivalry and try to come out on top."

Lampard said it was "great to be back and scoring goals" after the frustration of being on the sidelines, having hit nine in his last 10 games since coming back from injury..

"That's what you're here to do," he added. "It's frustrating for any player who's not fit -- you can't answer questions on the pitch.

"I'm pleased -- I've played regular games, scored some goals, contributed and I am part of a team that is doing really well. Long may that continue."
