CHICAGO -- The San Diego Padres have claimed left-handed reliever Keith Hessler off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Manager Andy Green said Tuesday that Hessler is a candidate to be added to the roster as the 26th player for Wednesday's split doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs.
Green, a former Arizona coach, saw Hessler transition from starter to reliever after signing as an amateur free agent in 2011 out of Coastal Carolina. Hessler has an 8.22 ERA in 20 big league appearances over two seasons with the Diamondbacks.
Green described the 27-year-old Hessler as a "live-arm lefty" with minor league options who provides needed depth in the organization.
