Penguins rookie scorer Bryan Rust day-to-day after Patrick Marleau hit

PITTSBURGH -- Penguins rookie forward Bryan Rust is day-to-day with an upper-body injury suffered in the third period of Pittsburgh's 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals Monday at Consol Energy Center.

Rust was carrying the puck into the offensive zone at 4:47 of the period when the Sharks' Patrick Marleau made contact with Rust's head, sending him to the ice. Marleau received a two-minute penalty for an illegal check to the head.

Rust remained on the ice for a moment, leaning on one knee before going off. After a few minutes, he returned for one more shift, but that was it for the remainder of the game.

"It's a blindside hit to the head," Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. "[Marleau] gets a penalty, and I'm sure the league will look at it."

There will be no supplemental discipline for Marleau, as the NHL Department of Player Safety looked at the play but ultimately felt the penalty on the ice sufficed.

Rust, 24, scored the Penguins' first goal of the game at 12:46 of the first period. It was his third goal in two games after he scored two in Pittsburgh's 2-1 win in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Rust has six goals in 18 playoff games this postseason, a franchise record for goals in the playoffs by a rookie.

"I just tried to keep everything down," Marleau said after the game. "I didn't want to get too high on him."

As for the possibility of supplementary discipline, Marleau said: "I don't think so. I kept my shoulder in and elbow in and everything in. ... I just kind of let him skate into me."
