San Diego Padres pitcher Erik Johnson had Tommy John surgery Thursday and will miss the 2017 season, according to a report.

Johnson, who was diagnosed with a flexor strain in mid-August and was placed on the 60-day disabled list, had the procedure done by Dr. James Andrews, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

The 26-year-old right-hander was acquired by San Diego in the trade that sent James Shields to the Chicago White Sox. He gave up 20 earned runs in only 19.2 innings over four starts with the Padres in 2016.
