Wil Myers (wrist surgery) progressing toward baseball activities

San Diego Padres outfielder Wil Myers is moving through the strength phase of his rehab and will progress to baseball activities late next week, interim manager Pat Murphy said after Saturday's 5-4 win over the Colorado Rockies.

Myers, the 24-year-old who was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in December, underwent surgery to remove a bone spur in his left wrist in mid-June and was expected to miss two months.

Prior to the operation, Myers had been bothered by soreness in the wrist for most of the season and missed 28 games while on the disabled list. He was reinstated in early June and played in three games before going back on the DL on June 15.

Myers was enjoying one of the best stretches of his major league career to kick off 2015, beginning to fulfill the offensive promise that made him a top Kansas City Royals prospect and the centerpiece of the haul of prospects the Rays received when they dealt James Shields -- who signed with the Padres last offseason -- to Kansas City in December 2012.

Myers is hitting .277 with five home runs and 19 RBIs in just 35 games played this season.
