FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- A man has been arrested after sheriff's deputies say he say physically assaulted and stabbed a woman after entering her Fresno County home.

"What we learned is between 7:30 pm and 8 pm on Sunday, a guy made his way into a home on the 8100 block of East Belmont Avenue. Once he got inside, he attacked the woman that was there," said Tony Botti with the Fresno County Sheriff's Office.

After the assault, the woman locked herself in a room until a family member came home and called 911.

Botti says that the suspect has been identified as 41-year-old Samuel Botello Rodriguez.

"She says he had this look in his eye that was very evil, she knew that he was up to no good, maybe on drugs," said Botti.

The sheriff's office says the suspect is unhoused and was out on AB109 for a prior burglary conviction.

That bill essentially reduces sentencing for certain non-violent crimes to help combat overcrowded prisons.

Rodriguez was taken into custody around 1 pm Tuesday at a Jack in the Box in Sanger, with the help of the local police department.

He's expected to be charged with attempted murder.

"Apparently the homeowner had her garage open and the door into the garage was unlocked and it was just an opportunity. This guy got into the house and went straight after her. We have no idea why he attacked her, at this point it seems random," said Botti.

Botti adds that it is important to stay vigilant at all times in your neighborhood.

"We want people not just in this area but all over just to beware that something like this could happen," said Botti.
