All roads are back open after Ammonia leak in Sanger
SANGER, Calif. (KFSN) -- A roof collapse caused an ammonia leak at a Sanger business on Thursday night.
The weather could be a factor in the collapse of the Del Monte plant in Sanger. It pulled down some piping causing a significant ammonia leak.
At least 10 employees were inside at the time but got out safely.
No homes in the area were evacuated.
Sanger's Fire Chief Greg Tarascou said the weather made the hazmat situation worse.
"The weather right now-- it's obviously cold and rainy and wet and it's really pushing the ammonia down on the ground, so the ammonia is actually staying a lot lower to the ground than we like it. Normally when it's hot outside you'll see it rise a little bit faster. This right now, as you can kinda see in the background, it tends to stay lower to the ground so people will smell it more."
Fire investigators were able to stop the ammonia leak overnight. They are now dealing with the building collapse.
All roads opened Friday morning, but the plant remains closed.
