VISALIA, Calif. (KFSN) -- Hundreds were in attendance at the Immigration Workshop at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia Thursday night with the focus on immigration rights and protections.

"We're seeing students, we're seeing farmworkers, we're seeing professionals, we're seeing folks from all walks of life," said Dr. Randy Villegas, a political science professor at the school.

The free bilingual event offering DACA renewals, a 45-minute presentation on the importance of immigration rights and consultations.

Immigration attorneys reminding clients with criminal convictions that its not a dead end, but rather a detour on their pathway toward citizenship.

"It's important to understand that not all convictions are equal," said Sully Bryan, and immigration attorney with Wilner and O'Reilly Law.

Protections are available for those with a criminal past including post-conviction relief.

"What this is is asking the court system to re-open their case and take away that guilty plea if, if possible," said Bryan.

In recent days, video across social media depicted U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents in rural parts of Kern County and Fresno County, targeting undocumented immigrant communities.

Action News reached out to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, who sent the following statement:

"The U.S. Border Patrol conducts targeted enforcement arrests of individuals involved in smuggling throughout our areas of operation as part of our efforts to dismantle transnational criminal organizations."

The raids reigniting childhood fears for Dr. Villegas.

"For the vast majority of my life, my parents were undocumented and so that was a very real fear growing up that my parents could be ripped a part from me at any moment," said Dr. Villegas.

His parents are now legal permanent residents.

"These raids, these violations of laws are going to spark a civil rights movement the likes of which the incoming president has never seen before," said Dr. Jesus Martinez, the executive director of CVIIC.

The potential impact goes beyond the undocumented population, also applying to mixed status families.

"These are our farmworkers, these are our students," said Dr. Villegas.

"These are our family members and nobody should have to live in fear going to the grocery store, or going to work or going to school."
