Oakhurst transgender teacher weighs in on Bruce Jenner's transition

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A local transgender teacher who made headlines herself is now weighing in on Bruce Jenner's decision to transition to a woman.

"I am a woman," said Bruce Jenner. Those four words is all it took for Jenner to rattle the nation. In the highest rated "20/20" interview since 2000, ABC's Diane Sawyer got an exclusive confession.

"The one real true story and the family was the one I was hiding and nobody knew about it," said Jenner.

In the Central Valley, another transgender woman -- Karen Scot of Oakhurst -- watched intently with the rest of the country.

"When I saw the interview, I cried and I cried with joy because I could see the joy in her face when we get to be our real selves," said Scot.

The 65-year-old former Olympian and television star asked Sawyer to refer to him as "he" during the interview. But Scot said "Ms. Jenner" during our sit down.

"She's a she. A her. Those are her pronouns now," said Scot. She hopes this transformation for Jenner transforms not only his life, but the lives of many transgender individuals who are persecuted every day. Scot said one transgender woman is violently murdered every 32 hours.

"It's always making it being transgender seem lurid and like it's sideshow, like a freak show, and like it's an oddity, and it's not; we're born," said Scot.
