Fresno introduces low or no-cost spay and neuter program for pets

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Mayor Jerry Dyer with other city officials announced they are allocating money to offer no to low costs to spay or neuter your pet for people in Fresno.

"You can receive low, or no cost spay and neuter services for your pets," said Mayor Dyer.

Mayor Dyer made the announcement Monday morning. A relief to people who might have trouble with the high costs of pet care.

"Spay and neutered for dogs, as you know, can cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars. But under this program, it will cost residents only $25," said Mayor Dyer.

He said the service for cats is free. Mayor Dyer said the costs will be covered within the city's current budget of over $1.7 billion.

If you previously adopted and your pet still needs to be spayed or neutered, Mayor Dyer said you can still take advantage of the program.

In addition, he said the plan is to help with the overpopulation of stray animals on the street.

"This is our proactive effort, proactive way of making sure our animal population, our community does not grow to the point where we end up getting a child out there killed by a vicious dog," said Mayor Dyer.

Fresno resident Myra Dancil was looking for her lost dog at the shelter. She said the cost kept her from getting her dogs spayed and neutered.

"It's pricey. That's the main reason why we haven't fixed them," said Dancil.

Dancil said she'll take advantage of this program. It's a relief to her wallet with three dogs needing this service.
