Drop-A-Brick and save water
FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A national brewery has teamed up with a California non-profit to help save water in one of the worst droughts in state history. It's a concept that's been around for years but with a modern twist.
Project Drop-A-Brick started out with a catchy in your face public service announcement about dropping a brick in your toilet tank to save water. But the founders of the non-profit discovered what public works' departments have known all along. Real bricks disintegrate and damage plumbing. So they came up with a rubber brick that won't mess up your plumbing.
Inside this rubber brick is a specially formulated powder that when it hits the water, it expands, much like the material in a baby's diaper, you put it in the tank, and it drops to the bottom.
Each brick saves half a gallon of water per flush. Which translates to a $25 savings on your water bill every year. If you have more toilets, and more bricks, you save more money.
Ian Montgomery, who is with the Drop-A-Brick non-profit, said, "If every single toilet in California used Drop-A-Brick it would save around 58 million gallons of water per day.
Shock Top Brewing Co was so impressed with the water saving device, it infused $100,000 into the campaign so that consumers can get a brick for free. As long as the money lasts, they'll be shipping bricks.
Montgomery said, "There doesn't need to be a drought to save water. It's a natural resource that as we move into the future is going to have to be considered more precious. And whether or not there's a drought, it's a good time to save water."
