Students donate items for those impacted by the recent hurricanes

Students at Kastner Intermediate stepped up to help people impacted by hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

Principal Ryan Eisele said this is part of a larger effort with their bus drivers who want to fill a bus full of items to donate.

The challenged started on Monday.

Throughout the week students donated a little bit of everything from school supplies to personal hygiene items.

"It was really neat to watch (it) unfold," he said. "We really weren't sure what to expect".

On on Friday during their break the students brought out all their donations to see what they collected.

"There is nothing better than seeing young people come together for a cause that's so much bigger than themselves," he explained. "Young people tend to have small worlds and to see their reaction to something so tragic, on the other side of the country, it's really inspiring".

Chloe Renfro, an eight grader, said it is devastating seeing videos of flooding in Texas.

"I started tearing up. I just tried to put myself in their shoes. If I were them I would be scared for my life and I don't know what I would do," Renfro said.

She added it is nice to help and give back.

"It makes me really happy (to help)," she said. "I feel really bad for the victims".

Eisele hopes that his students will learn from this experience, saying he wants them to remember and continue to help others.
