First flu-related deaths reported in Fresno County

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Fresno County Department of Public Health is confirming the first flu-related deaths in the county.

It says a man and a woman are the first deaths in Fresno County younger than 65 years of age this flu season.

The woman was 59 years old and the man was 62 years old. Both also had underlying health issues.

"This is a somber reminder that we all must do everything we can to assure that influenza does not spread within our County. Protect yourself. It is never too late to vaccinate," says Dr. Sara Goldgraben, Fresno County Public Health Officer.

She says many different options are open to people. "They can go to their pharmacy, their physician. Also the health department also still does give out vaccines. They just have to make an appointment."

And if you or a family member is suffering from flu symptoms such as fever, a bad cough and a rundown feeling, Dr. Goldgraben suggests you avoid spreading the sickness.

"If your child is sick don't send them to school. We want people who are sick to stay home and get better and don't get any other people sick at work or school," she says.

If the symptoms worsen and you have chest pain, Dr. Goldgraben suggests you visit the ER.
