THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- When 8-year-old Joyce Bailey was adopted by her family from China, she was malnourished, couldn't speak, and needed five surgeries on her eyes.
The third grader has exceeded everyone's expectations since then. She is incredibly talented on the piano, is outgoing with friends and family, and competing in the 2021 Braille Challenge.
The Braille Challenge is the only academic competition of its kind for students who are blind or visually impaired. There are five categories the students are tested on: reading comprehension, spelling, speed and accuracy, proofreading and charts and graphs.
Joyce competed against thousands of students from across North America and was named a top 10 finalist. She will find out if she won top prize on Friday.
