FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Miss California competition is in full swing in Downtown Fresno.

Dozens are taking the stage at the William Saroyan Theatre in the preliminary events this week, leading up to Miss California's coronation.

For a 30th year, Fresno is playing host to dozens of Miss California" and Miss California's Outstanding Teen hopefuls.

The pageant that will crown a future Miss America contestant is expected to draw hundreds to the theatre.

"It's a whole new show," Jill Cook with the organization said. "We've actually done a lot to modernize the show."

And that doesn't stop at the shows program.

The shows tech is sourced locally with Fresno-based company Live Light is handling the production.

"We have a new, set new risers on the stage, we've changed the format," Cook said. "So, there's a new dance number in the beginning. It's a fun and different experience than years past."

Former contestant and social media liaison Jill Cook tells us it's not just about the title or crown.

"This year's Miss California is receiving a scholarship of a minimum of $15,000," she said. "And that's money that goes directly to their institution or to their student loans."

This year is a record high and every girl competing gets some form of scholarship but it doesn't come easy.

"These girls are spending 14 hours a day in rehearsals and they're exhausted but it's also giving them amazing life skills," Cook said.

With all of the talent taking the stage competition is sure to be stiff but that doesn't stop what many of them consider the start of life long friendships.

The Miss California's Outstanding Teens contestants prove some of the loudest cheers won't just come from spectators.

"It's a giant family whether you're competing or volunteering these people look forward to meeting once, twice, three per year," Cook said.
