LAKE MCCLURE, Calif. (KFSN) -- Some simple tools and hard work are turning land at Lake McClure into one of the biggest mountain bike parks in the state.

Grant Parker with the Exchequer Riders Club said, "We have 700 acres of land to work with versus some of these bike parks like you would find in Fresno or the Bay Area they usually have between 10 to 20 acres.''

The Merced Irrigation District owns this property, and the nonprofit Exchequer Riders Club is helping design and build the project.

"It's not going to be set up for multi-use trails for hikers or horses, it's going to be for bikes only," explained Parker. "We want it to be for little kids being able to come out and ride to people who are super advanced and being able to hold races out here. We want the whole community to be able to come out and get involved."

The park is located in the Barrett Cove Park area. Some trails are already open, but the ultimate goal is 50 to 60 miles of prime riding space. It's free to the public after paying for parking at the lake.

Mountain bike rider Trenton Berner said, "To me it's great to have because I love riding and living in Merced there isn't much around for riding, since this is only a 45 minute drive, it's great."

But now the nonprofit is asking for help. It's hosting a volunteer trail work weekend January 24th and 25th. No experience or tools are necessary, and students can even get credit for community service.

Parker said, "This is a great way to give back to your community, get involved in something, and see a finished product at the end of the day."
