Fresno Police shoot home invasion robbery suspect, 1 suspect at large
Investigators say one of three home invasion robbery suspects was shot by Fresno Police officers near Fresno State Sunday morning.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Fresno Police Department is investigating a shooting involving officers near Fresno State.

Interim Police Chief Mindy Casto says police responded to an apartment complex on North Backer Avenue for a burglary in progress at 7:20 a.m. on Sunday.

Upon arrival, Casto says officers learned it was a home invasion robbery in progress.

She says three suspects wearing vests and masks identified themselves as police officers before breaking into an apartment and taking a large safe.

Casto says the suspects abandoned the safe at the apartment parking lot after being confronted by an officer on foot before taking off and nearly running over the officer in a car.

Casto says the officer fired his weapon, but no one was injured at the apartment complex.

The suspects continued fleeing toward Shaw and Maple avenues, making their way to Fresno State.

Officers were able to disable the suspect's car by using a PIT maneuver.

Casto says police deployed a K-9, and shots were fired but added it's unclear if the suspects also fired a weapon.

The driver of the suspect vehicle was shot as they jumped out of the car. Casto says was taken to the hospital and is in surgery.

A second suspect was taken into custody without incident but police say a third suspect remains at large.

Casto says the suspects were armed, and investigators have recovered at least one firearm.

No police officers were shot but Casto says several officers were injured when disabling the suspect's car. The victim of the home invasion robbery was not injured.

The two scenes will be blocked off for several hours as the investigation continues.

In a statement, Fresno State recommends avoiding the area of Shaw and Maple avenues if planning to come to campus on Sunday.

Casto says they will review surveillance and body camera footage but urges anyone with information on this incident to contact the Fresno Police Department.
