FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A 27-year-old man has been hospitalized following a near day-long standoff with police in northwest Fresno on Friday night.
Just before 10 pm, police were called to Indianapolis Avenue between Valentine and Hazel Avenues after a family reported that a 27-year-old man was shooting off his rifle.
"As officers arrived, they were able to have the family member safely evacuate and spoke with them to get some additional information about what was happening inside the house," said Fresno Police Lt. Leslie Williams.
Lt. Williams says officers worked through Friday evening into Saturday to peacefully detain the unidentified 27-year-old man.
On Friday night, Fresno police told neighbors to stay inside and shelter in place.
"I heard what I thought was fireworks, but it was more like a fully automatic weapon, was the sound at least. I heard that the first time and then I came outside my garage and seen police. Then as police were coming in down the street, I heard it again," recalled one resident.
This neighbor, who asked us not to share his name, says the street was covered with police cars.
"People walking down the street with their guard shields and their ARS. The cops were telling us to go inside, you know it could be dangerous," he said.
Other neighbors tell Action News they heard gunshots throughout the night.
During the standoff, some residents weren't able to get to their home because of the heavy police presence.
Police say over the course of about 21 hours, the 27-year-old man did communicate with a negotiator but eventually ended commutation.
Lt. Williams says SWAT teams were then scattered around the home on Saturday afternoon.
The suspect eventually made his way outside the home.
"He did exit the residence and ran eastbound with a rifle and one hand and a hammer in the other," said Lt. Williams.
The 27-year-old was detained and taken to the hospital where he's being treated for mental health issues.
Lt. Williams says the unidentified man has had run-ins with police and was previously arrested.
The suspect is facing two felony charges, including one for possessing a firearm.
