SANGER, Calif. (KFSN) -- Sanger Police responded to a shots fired call at 3:45 in the morning, near the intersections of Sanger Avenue and 13th Street at the 'Buy and Bye Market.'
Then, just minutes later, they found a victim less than a mile away.
"At about 3:50 in the morning, one of our officers was flagged down, behind our police department, regarding a subject in a vehicle that was suffering from a gunshot wound," said Sanger Police Department Commander Jason Boust.
There was a car with a broken window left near the police headquarters.
First responders rushed that man to the hospital, where officials say he was in critical but stable condition.
When detectives arrived at the market for their investigation into the shooting, they also discovered signs of a different crime.
They found shattered glass outside the door, where someone tried to get away with a hefty haul.
"Found evidence of a break-in, found an ATM machine that appeared to have been dragged down and was found up the road a distance," said Commander Boust.
It's still unconfirmed if the two crimes are connected.
But that ATM, left in the middle of the street, is now in police custody, and whoever tried to take it has not been caught.
"The ATM thefts have been going on throughout the valley, and Sanger was our turn last night, I guess," said Commander Boust.
In October, surveillance video shows a white SUV smashing into a northeast Fresno nail salon and a thief quickly taking off with the ATM.
Last month, a huge hole was left in a Northwest Fresno Save Mart after a red truck went through the front glass. Police believe the ATM was the target.
Commander Jason Boust urging people to stay vigilant.
"If you're able to secure your ATM, have an alarm on your business, have some fortifications to make it difficult for people to get in, because these are typically done at night, they're breaking windows, they are going in and dragging them out," said Boust.
Action News spoke with the market's owners, who say their insurance will cover the damage. Unfortunately, this is not the first time one of their businesses has been targeted for ATM theft.
The investigation is still ongoing; if you know anything, you can call the Sanger Police.
