FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- On Monday, the Senate confirmed President Donald Trump's pick to serve as Labor Secretary.

A Hanford High School and Fresno State Graduate, Lori Chavez-DeRemer will likely bring her experience growing up in the Valley with her to the Department.

"Whenever it is an individual from the Valley, regardless of partisanship, at a cabinet-level post, whether it's the state or federal level, certainly will have a big impact on our region," said Blake Zante of The Maddy Institute in February.

Between mass firings in federal departments and some undocumented workers not showing up to work amid the immigration crackdown, labor is at the forefront for the Trump Administration.

During her confirmation hearing, Chavez-DeRemer said she would review the caps on visas for some foreign workers while working to support the President's agenda.

"The mass immigration we've seen over the last four years has hurt the American worker, and we want to make sure we're supporting President Trump in his endeavor to support the American worker at all costs," said Chavez-DeRemer.

More than a dozen Democrats, including California Senator Adam Schiff, voted to confirm Chavez-DeRemer.

Former GOP Senate Leader Mitch McConnell, along with two other Republicans, voted against her confirmation, likely because of her previous support of labor unions.

Chavez-DeRemer posted on X after her confirmation saying she is "deeply honored."
