COALINGA, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Coalinga Police Department held a memorial service for K9 Nitro Monday morning.
Dozens from law enforcement to people in the community gathered to lay him to rest.
"I feel that it was important because that's basically just another police officer. It would be the same if it were a person; just coming out to show your support," said Coalinga resident Jordan Jones.
The department says Nitro was found lethargic in his outdoor kennel in July of 2024 after joining the force in 2022.
After attempts to save him, he passed away at an emergency vet.
His sudden death still stings for his initial trainer.
"When I see him again, I'll be the first to tell him he deserved better," said Coalinga Police Department Sgt. Damian Sparks.
Sgt. Sparks says he chose Nitro to serve and protect the city back in March 2022.
While he was not his handler and didn't get the chance to work with the half-German Shepherd and half-Belgian Malinois mix, he still had a special relationship with him.
"The bond is truly remarkable," said Sgt. Sparks. "You spend more time with these dogs than your family."
They didn't get off on the best foot because of Nitro's high energy, but that later changed.
"I've seen when he's dog tired, but you ask him to go find something, and he'll go back out," said Sgt. Sparks.
The four-year-old caring K9 leaves his paw print throughout the city of Coalinga.
"I want to thank the community for showing up today for our service for K9 Nitro," said Coalinga Police Department Chief Jose Garza.
While Nitro has now been laid to rest, the investigation into his death is still ongoing.
The Fresno County Sheriff's Office says they have turned over all evidence to the district attorney's office for review. The DA's office will determine if any charges will be filed.
