DeMar DeRozan has played for the Sacramento Kings for just one season, but the franchise has his back after a viral spike from Drake.
During the Canadian rapper's show in Sydney this week, a fan threw DeRozan's Toronto Raptors jersey on stage. Drake uncrumpled it, took one look then spiked it down off the stage.
The Kings clapped back at the Grammy Award-winning artist Tuesday.
They edited the clip to reflect DeRozan's Kings jersey hitting a fan in the face, who happily took it home. Sacramento also captioned it: "the 916 loves Deebo," emphasizing the "6" with an emoji to reference Toronto's 416 and 647 area codes. Sacramento's area code is 916.
DeRozan spent nine seasons with the Raptors, building a relationship with Drake. The two -- alongside Kyle Lowry -- even appeared on a Slam Magazine cover together in June 2016 titled: "6 Gods."
However, their dynamic changed last summer. In the heat of Drake's rap beef with Compton, California-born rapper Kendrick Lamar, DeRozan showed support for Lamar.
DeRozan, who is also a Compton native, danced on stage during Lamar's performance of "Not Like Us" -- the Grammy Award-winning diss track aimed at Drake -- at the "The Pop Out: Ken & Friends" concert on Juneteenth at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California. Less than a month later, DeRozan appeared in the song's music video, which includes the lyrics: "I'm glad DeRoz' came home, y'all didn't deserve him neither."
In November, Drake responded, telling the Raptors' broadcast that if the franchise retired DeRozan's jersey he'd "go up there and pull it down myself." The six-time All-Star responded by saying Drake would have a long way to climb, so "tell him good luck."
Whether the two end up repairing their relationship, DeRozan can count on the Kings' support in this feud.
