FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Tiny houses could soon be popping up throughout Fresno.
A tiny house was displayed at Fresno City Hall Saturday to celebrate the fact they are now legal in Fresno. The city will allow the homes on wheels to be placed in the back yards of most homes.
The houses can be used for additional family members, or even rentals. The mayor calls it a big first for the city.
"We are the first city in the nation to actually write into its development code authorization for tiny homes," Fresno mayor Ashley Swearengin said. "This is a hot new trend in the housing market."
"It's my size, for one," resident Shirely McGough said. "I love the kitchen and the bathroom, just the whole idea would be good for one person."
The house on display was made in Fresno by the Tiny House Company. They have been selling homes throughout the state and expect to start taking orders in Fresno.
The custom made homes cost anywhere from $45,000 to $75,000 and are from 2 to 4 hundred square feet in size. While they are on wheels, they are built to regular home standards and are not considered mobile homes.
They can be put on home lots of at least 6,000 square feet.
