300,000-Bat Ballet: Nightly flight on the bayouYou would never expect it walking by the Waugh Drive bridge. But every night 300,000 bats take flight and go on the hunt!

HOUSTON, Texas -- Houston, Texas is home to a lot of hidden gems, but you would not expect the Waugh St. Bridge to be home to more than 300,000 bats.

The bat colony living under the bridge has become a spectacle over the years, with crowds gathering every night to watch their flight for food.

The bats struggled during Hurricane Harvey and February's winter storm. But according to the Buffalo Bayou Partnership, the colony's numbers are already expected to be back at pre-freeze levels.

The bats eat as much as 6,000 pounds of insects every night, and July and August are the best months to see the bats because they love the warm weather.

If you would like to learn more about the bats, or check them out in person, visit Buffalo Bayou Partnership's website.
