DINUBA, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Dinuba and Orosi-Cutler community came together to honor a beloved friend, mentor, and teacher on Wednesday morning.
A celebration of life for 50-year-old Sergio Martin took place outside his classroom at El Monte Middle School in Orosi.
Martin was killed in his Dinuba home last Monday during an apparent burglary.
Those who knew and loved him have been distraught over the loss, including his colleague and former student, Adriana Campos.
"It's a very big gap, I think a gap that will never be filled, it's a heavy presence and I think about it every time I step foot onto campus, and I just prepare myself to support our teachers and support our staff and students but I know his presence is definitely missed," says Adriana.
Martin's parents were also in attendance.
People lined up to share their condolences with them.
"It was almost necessary for the community because we needed some closure. Finish out the year strong. Just being here, seeing his family and I just felt it was necessary for the community," expresses Adriana.
Behind the event, was Cutler-Orosi Superintendent, Yolanda Valdez.
"Mr. Martin was pure joy and people would come into his classroom to be uplifted. He was a very special man, a man who lived life to the fullest. And these are people that are not only greatly missed but also are valued and held at such high esteem," explains Yolanda.
Martin worked at the middle school for seven years.
His family describes him as a positive person who had a love for people and music.
Students also expressed their heartfelt condolences to the crowd.
"To honor you I make sure to appreciate everyone I love. I now know there is no guarantee of days or hours spent in their presence. To honor you I listen to music you would've liked and I sing at the top of my lungs with the windows rolled down," one student mentions.
The ceremony included a moment of silence and a balloon release in memory of a man who leaves a lasting legacy at his campus and in his community.
